Maths is one of those subjects that many people can find daunting- but it doesn’t have to be like that, and you may be surprised at some of the ways in which Maths is really important, forming a bedrock for much of what we do day-to-day.
Learning Maths is so important because it builds essential life skills. When children become confident in Maths and carry that confidence into their adult lives, it strengthens their thinking skills and they become better at problem solving (Maths is great for the brain, strengthening areas such as memory and critical thinking). They also become better able to reason something through logically and in a structured way.
Just as importantly, they become better at finances and understanding the basic economics that help us manage our day-to-day money. This is probably more important these days than ever before given the ever-increasing cost of living.
And speaking of costs, Maths is a low-cost subject to learn. It doesn’t require expensive materials as many of the items needed to learn it can easily be found in our immediate environments.
Of course, Maths is also important from a career perspective, because proficiency helps open-up a wide range of possible careers across many different disciplines in science, engineering, economics and technology.
Even from a young age it’s possible to show children practical ways in which Maths can empower them and make their lives work better. Something as simple as helping to understand pocket money and saving money, budgeting, working out how long they might need to save up for an item they want – these are all tangible ways in which the benefits of getting better at Maths really help people in life. And we all want life to be easier rather than harder!
As children move into adulthood there are just as many benefits to a good grounding in Maths. Managing bills and tasks that everyone dreads such as tax returns are made more manageable when you have good basic Maths skills and the confidence that comes with knowing that you can deal with the task in hand. Basic numeracy is something we all need to live independently without struggling.
At Gloucestershire Primary Tutors we are adept at bringing children up to speed in Maths so they can flourish in the subject – without making any of it daunting. Learning is so much more effective when it’s fun, and Maths is no exception.
