We were asked the other day about the kind of positive changes to expect from students engaging with home tutoring, so we’ve put together our thoughts on the subject. Feel free to get in touch with your comments, or of course if your child needs a helping hand with their learning.
One thing that people often tend not think about is how it can benefit the child emotionally and psychologically. People tend to think about the academic benefits (and there are, of course, many!) but there are other aspects to the tutoring process and environment which are just as important. For example, students learning via private tutoring are more likely to feel empowered to ask questions, as they won’t be judged by their peers. Also, the setting is less stressful which is obviously good for mental and psychological health. Improving levels of self-confidence is another key aspect, and this can often be done far more effectively when the child or young person is outside of the class environment.
Mistakes made in classroom settings can often be a precursor to lowered levels of confidence and self-esteem, but in the tutoring environment, mistakes can be treated positively as ways to improve and learn further.
Obviously, there is the academic side to consider- tutors can focus their attention on specific gaps in the student’s knowledge, in a way that a teacher managing an entire classroom could certainly never do (and any errors can be identified and corrected far more quickly). The lessons can be paced according to the student’s speed of learning- rather than them feeling rushed or hurried along. Eventually, the tutor and student can focus together on moving beyond memorising or learning how to carry out certain tasks to actually understanding concepts inside out – which again can be quite daunting and challenging in the classroom.
A student who feels happier and more relaxed is also more likely to develop a love of learning throughout their life, which is a massively positive outlook to have. In fact, there are many positive attitudes that can be gained and of use later in life through tutoring sessions – being able to think critically and defend ideas, manage time effectively, and build a healthy curiosity about anything and everything!
